The Mayfield Police Department would like to remind
everyone that as of January 1, 2007 not wearing a seat belt became a
primary offense in the State of Kentucky. Until that date it was a
secondary violation and police officers could not stop your vehicle
solely for the reason of not using a seat belt. Statistics have shown
that you have a much greater chance of survival when involved in a
vehicle crash when wearing a seat belt. Mayfield Police Officer’s will
strictly enforce this law.
We would also like to remind those of you that
have infants and or small children to make sure that they are not only
secured in a child safety seat, but that the safety seat is properly
installed. Members of the Mayfield Fire Department are certified
technicians of child safety seats and will gladly install them for you.
They ask that you call 251-6243 to schedule an appointment.
Our state has always been on the lower end of the
scale as far as seat belt usage. Lawmakers and police agencies both
believe that a major reason for this was the fact that this was a
secondary offense. We feel that this new law will help save lives.
Even if the driver of a vehicle is wearing a safety belt they can still
be cited for any passengers of the vehicle not wearing a seat belt.
The Mayfield Police Department would also
encourage motorists to obey all traffic laws such as speeding, observing
traffic lights and stop signs, having proof of insurance and current
registration. There were over 350 reported traffic accidents in the
city limits of Mayfield in 2006. Most if not all of them were
attributed to driver inattention. Our goal is to reduce that number in
2007 but we will not be able to do this without your help.
