Don't forget to run your clocks forward March 14, 2010

1st ANNUAL NATIONAL DAY OF SERVICE EVENT

Barry Rice is the new Mayfield Police Chief. The Mayfield City Council approved Mayor Arthur Byrn’s recommendation  to hire Rice to replace Dale Murphey, who announced his retirement earlier this year. Rice has 20 years of law enforcement experience and he’s no stranger to the Mayfield Police Department. Rice worked as a Captain and Shift Supervisor for the MPD from 1988 – 1998. He has spent the past 10 years with Kentucky State Police.

Rice will be sworn in on Saturday, August 1. His first official day of work will be Monday, August 3. In brief comments made at Monday night’s council meeting, Rice said he wants the Mayfield Police Department to be one of the premier law enforcement agencies in the region. He also said he wants a department that all citizens of Mayfield can be proud of.

Mayfield’s search for a new police chief stretched about two months. Mayor Byrn said there were 10 original candidates and the committee interviewed six of those. Two finalists emerged and the committee was set to make a recommendation in May when Byrn announced the committee was taking a step back to re-evaluate the situation. The committee then interviewed two new candidates, one of which was Rice.

The officers of the Mayfield Police Department would like to welcome our new leader and wish the best to him and believe the city will be pleased with the police department of the future. Many of his goals and directions are very supported by the officers and look forward to the new directions that we will take on.
